We all go through phases when it comes to our music choices, and Avalon Foundation Marketing Manager and Head of MCTV Tim Weigand is no different. Tim shares with us what he’s feeling at the moment (special emphasis on ‘moment’, because these phases change quickly and often for Tim), and dishes on what upcoming show at the Avalon Theatre he’s most excited about.
To be completely honest, I am a melody person much more than a lyrics one. Give me a good catchy melody, hook, what have you and I am all about it. I like lyrics too, don’t get me wrong but they are not what has ever gravitated me towards a song. I learned about great lyrics as I became older, more mature, if you will, and was exposed to more music by people who had much more of a musical palette. I learn about music to this day like that. Right now I am really into Squeeze. For those who know Squeeze, you may find that refreshing or regurgitating, but currently, I can’t get enough of them. If you are young enough to not know them, you should give them a listen, because quite frankly, there is no one really remotely close to them today. Squeeze is a big blue collar band. And that blue collar shows up in their lyricism as well as their style. I love the video posted here too, so simple yet so well done. No doubt a bunch of English boys in a flat somewhere, needing to put a video out - back in the days when MCTV ruled - and showing just a touch of disdain for that practice. They’re totally in tune with each other, even while the girls make them a spot of tea. This looks to be done in the one “continuation shot” style that is so popular today. But there is an interesting edit at about three quarters of the way through the video that breaks that continuity a tad. You have to look for it to catch it.
I set out to try to memorize these words initially because I could get through the beginning of each line but then mumbled the melody the rest of the way. It has taken me several listens, just ask Suzy Moore. Suzy is a straight up lyrics person by the way. She knows every lyric to every Rolling Stone song ever written. Yep. That’s right. Anyway as I started to really pay attention to what they were singing about, I was moved. For those of you who know me, you will recognize how close this song comes to my life. And not just mine, but millions of others. And while it certainly doesn’t define my life, it comes very close in terms of falling in love, having a child and the thereafter. The way they move the story along, the storytelling and the melody make this a classic. Song lyrics are here. As I always say, crank it.
My Concert Pick of the Week – Mavis Staples Sunday, October 12 at 8pm – Rock and Roll hall of Famer, Lifetime Achievement Grammy Winner, Rolling Stones Top 100 Vocalists ever. “You just feel so uplifted when you leave her show.
